what is a duplicate email

how does outlook define a duplicate email?

I have three pst files that share some files. IF I export them each into a
new pst file, and use "do not export duplicates", how safe is that to not
lose an email?

Exporting to and importing from a PST is never the way to transfer data
between Outlook instances. You WILL lose data and you may correct your mail
profile.

Were I seeking to do this, I'd simply merge the multiple PSTs into a new one
and us a duplicate remover to get rid of any duplicates.

thanks for your response. I will do that. I frequenty export my main
exhcange mailbox into a pst file and choose "do not export duplicates" so i
have a set without duplicates. Is that going to leave me with messages
missing? What exactly does "do not export duplicates" mean, and how does
outlook do it?

Rather than exporting from the Exchange mailbox, create a PST with
File>New>Outlook Data File and then copy each of the mailbox folders to the
new PST. When done, right-click the PST and choose Close. Close Outlook.
Your PST will be a complete image of the data in the mailbox.
