i have an oem version of XP home on my dell machine which i upgraded
to XP Pro whilst on a MCP course. this is an evaluation copy of XP
Pro. what happens when this evaluation copy expires (very soon). will
I lose any data etc.?
If needs be I'm prepared to back up all my data and delpart, and
reinstall my original version of XP home , but this is mucho hassle.

The following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article should be helpful:

Error Message: The Evaluation Period for This Copy of Windows Has Ended;
Windows Cannot Start

But is what you have to do. Eval versions should be marked as not to be
used on production machines.

But if i put in my XP home CD can I choose to "upgrade" to XP Home
from XP Pro without losing any data??

You can't upgrade from XP Pro to Home. Not sure if there would be an
uninstall option in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, but you can check.

You can't upgrade from Home to Pro - its a downgrade. You have to do a
clean install - and to get settings and so on taken over, read Gary
Woodruff's article on Files and settings Transfer at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm
