What graphics card next?

Hi.
My pc has a Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard with an AGP slot. I currently
have a Nvidia Geforce FX5200 graphics card. I recently upgraded ram to 2Gb
but it's not made much didfference to graphics running smoothly so was
thinking of upgrading the card, but not sure what to upgrade to. Any
suggestions please.

There are ATI HD 3870 AGP cards available which should be more to your
liking. I have no idea what country you are posting from, but in the US try
www.newegg.com. Those cards came out just after (of course!) I upgraded my
FX5700 to a HD 2600XT with 512mb DDR3 from Sapphire. But my HD 2600 is just
fine. And forget all those rumors about horrors of changing from nVidia to
ATI, I had no problems at all. Just remember to uninstall nVidia's software
before changing out cards.

The FX5200 was pretty much the cheapest card in the stack. So anything
you buy will be an upgrade.

What do you do with your computer? If all you do is email and web surfing
the video card is not the problem as the 5200 can easily handle those tasks.

It was up until recently, but started playing a few games lately and the 5200
can't handle it and the FPS is non exsistant!!!

Cheers, didn't see this card in AGP but a bit out of the price range I was
looking to pay anyway and I'm in the UK where prices seem way higher!!!

Thinking about getting the HD2600PRO 512MB DDR2 AGP 600/1000MHZ. Just bought
Doom 3 today off a friend to try. What will it play like with this card,
which I presume is basically the same as yours.
Cheers

Get a 9550 GT or 9600 pro with either 256 or 512mb and if you budget is not
your limit, you might wanna consider getting a 6600GT

The "horror" with ATI cards begins when you interact with ATI support
regarding drivers, and on the 'phone they want you to read out MASSES and
MASSES of miniscule and LONG no's on the little white tickets stuck on the
500 ic's on the card !!!!! ...(well, it seems like that when you're doing
it :)

(Perhaps that's changed - I haven't touched an ATI card for YEARS and YEARS
!!!)

....compared to Nvidia's "unified" driver, which on the whole, is pretty good
! ...though even at Nvidia website it's possible to download a "unified"
driver that, even though your card model is in the list, actually contains
no driver for your "older card" i.e. locating a unified driver that
actually contains drivers for your "older" card, can be difficult - though
it is there on their site somewhere - if you dig hard enough !!!
....perhaps even that has improved - I haven't downloaded from Nvidia for
several weeks.

regards, Richard
