What does the CHKDSK Error Msg Mean?

When running CHKDSK C: /r from the Recovery Console, I get:

"CHKDSK found and fixed one or more errors on the volume"

This happens EVERY single time I run chkdsk (except when running two chkdsks
back to back with no intervening activity whatsoever).

Is this error frequency normal? Or should I worry about a dying disk?

If normal, can anyone explain what "errors" are being "found"?

The disk is old, but newly reformated (NTFS), and with WinXP (SP2) newly
reinstalled from the CD and with no updates or other pgms installed yet.

TIA,

Glenn Livet

An error in that case can be a logical error - a crosslinked file or a file
fragment, for example - or it can refer to physical damage on the surface of
the disk. In any case, if you're getting errors "EVERY single time" you need
a new hard disk and quickly. Also see my sig.

Go to the disk manufacturer's web site and download the diagnostic utility
and run it. That will tell you if the disk is on the way out.
