CHKDSK Doesn't HELP

I'm running a small business on one PC and am now in a world of hurt. I've
recently added QuickbooksPro and since then my machine has had performance
problems. Yesterday I was met with the blue screen "Unmountable Boot
Volume." I followed Microsofts support advice, started the "Recovery
Console" and ran CHKDSK.

CHKDSK states "The volume appears to one or more unrecoverable problems".
Any advice on next steps?

First: Backup!

Download the hard disk diagnostics from your hard drive manufacturer's
web site and run them. (The web site will have instructions.) The
manufacturer's diagnostics will tell you if your hard disk is damaged
and, if you are still under warranty, will set you up for a warranty
claim. (You'll get a reconditioned hard disk in exchange for your old one.)

Backup often!

Hey Frank,

Are you able to boot into windows after the error message displayed??

No, I can't backup or anything else. I called Dell and they said the hard
drive needs to be replaced.

Frank:

Anything you don't backup will be lost. You will have to return your
current hard disk to Dell if you don't want to be charged for the new one.

To backup data on a hard drive that won't boot: Install the defective
hard drive into a working computer (running XP) as a secondary (aka
'slave') drive, then use the working copy of Windows to backup or just
copy data from the defective hard drive to the good hard drive. (You may
have to 'take ownership' of your folders on the defective drive, but
that's a simple software maneuver.)

If you are at all unsure of what to do, don't take chances, especially
since your livelihood is involved. Pay someone to do it for you. (It's
fast and very easy...when you know what to do.)

And now, some advice for the future: Backup! Backup often. With an
up-to-date backup, your present situation is reduced to nothing more
than a minor annoyance.
