What do you want to do?

J

When I insert a CD/DVD I no longer get the dialog box that asks what I want
to do. Everything opens in Windows Explorer. This may be associated with
another issue I am having in programs not opeing my CD/DVDs with the
associated program. Example: Associate AVI with VLC Player and DVD opens in
WinExplorer. The file will play fine if I open it in VLC. DVD movies will not
autoplay/start in any app I associate with the VOB files, but each app will
play the movie fine if opened in the app or the app is started first.

Any clues ?

Happy to provide more info as needed.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the reply ...

The app says that it found problems but cannot fix them.

I think the issue may be that no matter what CD/DVD I insert including data,
they always open in Windows Explorer. I no longer get the dialog box that
asks what I want to do - for anything.

Any suggestions here?

The app ran, said to reboot and I did - no change.

Thanks Lem -

I read, I ran, I removed handlers from apps no longer installed, and the
scan said no orphaned or handlers missing information. Still the same issue.
Even tried a registry change that solved an issue for a person
.....NoDriveTypeAutoRun from 00 00 00 00 to 95 00 00 00. That didn't help
either.

I would even be happy if I got the dialog box that says "What do you want to
do?" or something like that when the CD/DVD is read.

Will keep searching.

Because you had already run the AutoPlay Repair Wizard with no joy, I
didn't really expect that CleanHandlers would magically work either.

However, there are links on the initial CleanHandlers page that lead to
further information concerning AutoPlay. If the articles and utilities
that you find from following the links don't help, I don't have any
further specific suggestions. Sorry.

If this problem arose recently, you might try System Restore to a point
before the problem started. Before you do this, uninstall any
applications you installed since that restore point.

There's always the option of reinstalling Windows, but that seems a bit
overkill to me. It depends on how much this problem bothers you and how
much of your time you want to spend researching the cause.

If you decide to experiment with registry settings, I strongly suggest
that you back up the registry before you start. You might want to use
ERUNT: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

If you opt for a repair install, back up your important data first.
Windows Repair Installs are not supposed to modify data, but better
safe. http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

I don't mind tweaking with the registry. I generally do a registry backup
each time I do any serious modifying.

What would be nice is if I could get the dailog box back that asks what you
want to do with the data/file etc. - like open with ACDSee, Photoshop
Elements, PowerISO, or whatever. I haven't seen that dialog box for a long
time, but then didn't need it until now, when autoplay doesn't work. If the
DVD player app is running, all is OK. I think this might be associated with
no Open With choices when I right mouse a file. If I right mouse a jpg, there
are no choices. Open With just expands to open with. I lost this a long time
ago and no one has been able to get it back for me. Have posted here with
results "Opens With"

All CD/DVDs open in Windows Explorer view.

Any additonal ideas?

Have you tried Kelly's line 220, "Restore Open With on the Right Click"?
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Then she has this page with more suggestions:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Click "O" and scroll down to "Open With" area.

Click "A" and there's a long list of suggestions on Autoplay problems,
including:
Restore AutoPlay Handlers (Line 99)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Also try registering these from a command line.. some may not be related
to your problem in the least; I just listed some I've seen used for
"similar" problems:

regsvr32 SHMEDIA.DLL (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 ole32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 mshtml.dll (Press Enter key)
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll (Press Enter key)

SOLUTION ! ! !

In searching for a solution there was a comment on another forum that
suggested using DVD Decrypter and just checking the "Auto Insert
Notification" under Devices. It was already checked, but I unchecked and
rechecked, rebooted and ... duh, duh!
What it did was return the dialog box that asks "What would you like Windows
to do?" I am happy with this solution even though it doesn't autoplay. I
didn't check any of the selections for opening "all the time", cause there
are times I want to use a different app.

Here is the link to DVD Decrypter for those who have yet to find a solution.
http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/

Thanks to all who provided solutions, just that they didn't work for me. I
am sure that there are others that they will work for.

Again, thanks to all for your contibutions. :)

Here is the registry setting that changed
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Policies
Explorer

NoDriveTypeAutoRun from: 00 00 00 00 to 91 00 00 00

I saw this change mentioned on CDfreaks but it was recommended to change the
00 00 00 to 95 00 00 00
I tried the above, but did not work for me. The change that DVDdecrypter
made to 91 00 00 00 works ... at least for me.

Hope this is helpful to someone else.
