I have a e-machines t5010 computer. I want to have it receive a dsl
internet connection wirelessly, from my other Pc. I bought a linksys
usb network adaptor. Is this all I need? I also bought a Wireless
Linksys router for the other end.

A wireless USB network adapter presumably.. set up the computer that will be
hard wired to the router first, and get it connected to the internet.. you
will need to do this first as you will have to make entries for the wireless
network WEP/WPA key(so) subsequently..
Then install the software on your machine for the USB network adapter..

So the Pc with the Dsl modem has to have the Wireless router attached
and be connected to the internet.
The other Pc without internet needs the Usb wireless adaptor. Is that
it?
So I won't need a Lan card?

Also make it a point to read up on wireless security issues and how to stop
drive by eavesdropping.

errr...missed a step.

The DSL modem will need to be unplugged from the PC it's
currently on and then plugged into the WAN/Internet
port of the router in order to be shared throughout the network.

Unless you want to open the ICS can of worms.

To the OP:

If you don't understand what I just said above, you
really should get a local geek to come over and help.

You'll be up and running in no time.

Hi,

Just to share..

(1) You don't need a LAN card - if you just wish to connect to Internet
using your "wireless" network. However, you could have a LAN card so that
you could connect to Internet with LAN and/or Wireless. In many cases, LAN
connection is faster than using wireless - but the choice is yours.

If I understood correctly, you have two PCs. You already have DSL Internet
connection - that means you have the modem. You also have a Linksys
Wireless router (presumably also comes with LAN ports).

The first step is to connect DSL modem to the wireless router. Please refer
to the router user's manual for how to connect it to the modem and doing
basic configurations including security settings.

After that, you have two options. If you wish to use only wireless
connection, you need to install one wireless card for each of the two
desktops and then use the wireless card to connect to the wireless router.

If you, however, wish also to have the LAN option. You then would need one
LAN card for each of the two desktops.

Certainly, you could also have the option for one PC only uses wireless
(then it only needs a wireless card) and the other has LAN or both types
(then it will need both cards).

Hope this helps.

The USB wireless adapter IS a LAN card.

Here is a simple chart for setting up your router/pc's hardeware correctly.

----Hardwired
connection to PC
DSL Modem--->Wireless/wired Router---
----Wireless
connection on laptop.

A LAN card is required on the computer that presently connects to the
internet..

How does your computer presently connect to the modem?.. is it connected via
a USB cable or is it a CAT5 Ethernet patch cable (RJ45 male connectors at
both ends)?

Does the modem have both USB and RJ45 connections on its back panel?

Assuming that the modem has RJ45 capability.. best way to connect

The PC that brings in the internet will be connected to one of the LAN ports
on the router via a LAN card (maybe already integrated into your computer)
via a CAT5 patch cable (RJ45 connectors both ends), and the WAN port on the
router will connect to the modem also using a CAT5 patch cable.. this method
allows both computers to be completely independent of each other regarding
internet connection..

Assuming that the modem has only USB capability.. only if you have to, or
you want control over the wireless connection..

The modem will be connected to the computer, and the computer will connect
to the WAN port on the router via a CAT5 Ethernet patch cable attached to
the LAN port on the computer.. this method requires the setting up of ICS
(Internet Connection Sharing), and the wireless connection will only work as
long as the computer connected directly to the router is powered up..

As far as I am aware, the Linksys setup literature is quite good and
explains it all well..
