I have only experienced this recently and I already chucked out one Operating System because of this it
was really bad. I have Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP2 going. I plan on going to SP3 but right
now I'm waiting. I installed the system about a week ago and all was fine. Then I started installing
Security Updates and the issue came back.

I am losing focus between the mouse and whatever it is trying to access. For example if I try to highlight
text in a window the mouse will go arrow and lose the ability to drag and cover. If I access the title bar I
feel like I am skating on ice. There is no grip between the mouse and whatever it is trying to access.
Sometimes it's fine other times it is really bad. Ever heard or seen anything like this? Thanks.

This is a domain controller. The other systems in the Network do not exhibit even the tinest iota of this behavior.

A shot in the dark, but you have, of course, tried a different mouse?

Well why would the mouse work and then stop after each installation of an operating system? I mean if
the mouse were bad then after I trashed the Op sys where this issue was unbearable the issue would still
be there in the new op sys which was actually a replica of the first. Mouse was fine. It was only after
putting in Security Updates (which is really all I've done) the issue came back.

As further info. Someone suggested installing the drivers for the mouse. Since I haven't done that in
years I was really hesitant to do that. I've never had much luck with Logitec's drivers. Don't need them
really. But I did notice there is a setting in the Control Panel applet for the Mouse called "Sample Rate."
I increased that to the Max. Now I can shake a window while holding onto the Title Bar. That seems
better. But no it is really not all that much better.

I guess a different mouse is my only alternative right now. Maybe it just doesn't like Winter in Upstate
New York.

It's not as bad as it was in the last Op sys. Not fixed but is better. That one you couldn't even drag a
window. Mousedown on the Title bar and drag did nothing at all in that one. So that Op sys was
chucked.

It almost seems that the Domain Controller is "doing something" and while it is doing it focus is being lost
on the desktop. On the other one I couldn't even drag a Desktop icon.

Hi,

Mice are cheap. I would purchase an optical USB mouse and make sure
you don’t have a mouse pad that has any strong design on it. Eg. like
the new "Dell" Black and white mousepad that drives the optical
mouse batty.

If that doesn’t solve your problem then you can worry about patches
etc. Basically every mouse problem I have ever had on my 500 machines
has been caused by the mouse and not the OS. The only exception has
been when I plugged a PS2 Mouse into the PS2 Keyboard slot by mistake
as the PS2 ports were unmarked.

Also if the mouse as a cord issue or a clicker issue, it could easily
be intermittent. As this is a Server, it is worth it to just replace
the mouse.

Cheers,

Lara

Well I have a brand new one right next to me. Is the same kind. Let me try that and see how it goes.

Hi,

Let me know how it goes =). If it doesn’t solve the problem then there
may be other issues. However mouse drivers are pretty standard. I
have never had to install one ever.

Cheers,

Lara

Me neither. I can't just unplug the other mouse and put it in. I have to shut down the Server and reboot
and I can't do that until users are away. So it may not be till this Weekend to test.

problem then =

Hi,

Is it a USB mouse? If so you can do a hot plug. I have done it with a
PS2 as well. I have rarely had to shut down a machine to replug in a
keyboard or mouse unless they are plugged into the wrong ports.

Cheers,

Lara

OK I put a different mouse in. Same kind and transfered the old one over to the machine where there was
no issue. Now the other one is having trouble of a mouse with no grip.

Dang. Didn't know this is one way a mouse can die. They just never died on me before. Thanks for the
help.

Hi George,
Dang. Didn’t know this is one way a mouse can die. They just
never died on me before.

Wow, you have been lucky. I have seen pretty much every type of screwy
behaviour from a mouse. Eg. One would overheat and get really hot and
start zooming the pointer around the screen. We thought the machine
was possessed or infected with a virus’. Turned out it was the mouse.

Glad it was a simple and easy fix especially being it was a server.

Cheers,

Lara
