what controls the appearance of the icons on the desktop

Is there a program that runs each time the computer boots that puts
the icons on the desktop. I seem to have lost my icons and have to
control alt delete to get them back.

Explorer.exe. You may have a messed up user account.

If you use the Task Manager to kill explorer.exe, the Taskbar and the
Desktop will disappear.

If it seems your icons have all been lost off the desktop, right click
on your desktop, go to "Arrange Icons By->" and make sure "Show All
Desktop Icons" has a check beside it. All of your icons should
re-appear.

or

Right click on the desktop, point to ACTIVE DESKTOP and see
]if "Show Desktop Icons" is checked. If not,
click on it and they should show up!
