What causes icons to disappear from tray?

I have my tray set to show all icons (not to hide inactive ones), so this is
not the issue.
I have two examples of icons not showing in right end of the tray when I
expect them to. One is that a backup program I have had for years no longer
has an icon there. There's a shortcut on the desktop, so it's not serious,
but I'm curious. What could have caused it to go away?
The second is that on my computer (XP pro), a little two-computer icon
appears when my connection to the internet gets established. But on another
computer (XP home), it doesn't. We end up just rying IE until it works.
Interestingly, an icon for a wireless connection that looks just like it is
always there. The wireless is from another apartment and is weak and we
never use it.

For the network connection icon, go to Control Panel | Network connections |
right-click the Local Area Connection | Properties and check the "display
icon" option.
