what causes a template to get larger when parts are deleted?

I create a monthly newsletter. I made a template to use as the basic for
each edition. when I delete parts of the old newsltter to make room for the
new information, the size of the document gets larger! I can't figure out
how to keep this from happening. size is important. What's the problem.
How do I delete and make the document smaller?

Why don't you delete the variable information from the template before you
save it? Then create a new document from that template.

Thank you for your response, Graham. I'm not sure I understand your
suggestion. I delete the variable information from the old newsletter. Then
I save it to be the template for the next month's edition. But if I delete
more from that template, the size of the file gets larger. For example:
after the first set of deletions, the file was down to 1023 kb. then I saw
more to delete and saved it and the file size went up to 1347. That's the
problem I'm facing.

You appear to be reusing a document as a sort of template, whereas what you
should be doing is creating a template - File > Save As a template *.dot. -
into which you can insert your variable information.

There are lots of ways a document can grow unexpectedly, including saving
versions, fast saves, and embedding graphics rather than linking them etc.

Dear Graham,

Your reply is very helpful. I was unaware of ".dot" as an option. Also, I
am unaware of embedding vs linking photos. where would I find information on
these options? Sounds like both of these answers are subjects I need to
