What are your favourite customisations or extensions for firefox?

R

Rili

So far my favourites are:

Scrollbar anywhere: Allows you to right click and drag up or down thus not
needing to use the scroll bars anymore (a replacement for mouseimp which
doesn't work on firefox)
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/marc.boullet/

Flashblock: Blocks all flash animation, unless you click the flash play
button on it. This really makes news sites so much easier to read without
all that animation stuff catching your eye.
http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

Advanced Highlighter Button: Allows you to highlight words in the search box
(similiar to the google toolbar but much quicker than than the googlbar for
firefox) I use to use the googlebar for firefox, but found it way to slow
when adding more words when highlight was on.
http://membres.lycos.fr/pcdingo/index.php3?lang=en&s=ext#ahb

Blocking Advertisement: Advertisements on websites are annoying, often
breaking up text and flashing to get your attention. To stop about 99% of
the ads on the internet from even showing, add the following code to your
userContent.css file:
http://texturizer.net/firefox/adblock.html

Just get a wheel mouse -- it does the same thing and can be used for
most apps installed on Windows.

Don't need an extension for that. Just look at JavaScript options.

I have a five button optical wheel mouse already. The scroll wheel on the
mouse is way to slow for big web pages and it jumps lines at a time making
it hard to keep fixed on the one point unless you are clicking the scroll
wheel and then letting it slowly scroll down which is what I do for reading
long articles.

People that use mouseimp will tell you how good direct scroll is on firefox.

I have that too, but my copy is mainly French. Is there a wholly
English version anywhere ? If so then could someone point out the
download link please ?

TIA.

I like to open tabs in the background , that way I can right click on
all the links on a page that I want ( such as this forum ) then go to
each of them 1 by 1 .
None of the links in version 1.0 RC1 found Tabbrowser Preferences
automatically .

Hmm, sounds like your mouse settings are wrong. My scrolling on long
web pages is silky-smooth. Perhaps different mice act differently too.

How 'bout the home page: http://downthemall.mozdev.org

I am pretty sure that's where I got my copy. I don't see mention of an
English version. That's why I asked for a download link.

IIRC, there were some extensions that messed up the localizations in the
profile such that it and other extensions (which had french
localizations) began to appear in french. You might have the same problem..

I think we are talking about different things here. If you use the
scroll wheel by rotating it, it takes a while to get to the bottom of
a long page as it normally scrolls at 3 lines per notch so on a long
webpage this is too slow (I realise that you can change this to a page
at a time). If you press the scroll wheel button then you use the auto
scroll feature which is quicker, but harder to use in that to stop the
webpage from auto scrolling you need to exactly position the mouse
pointer in line with the autoscroll icon. It is just difficult to use
if you are jumping all around the webpage or document, however it is
quite handy if you are reading the document from top to bottom in a
steady fashion.

Now direct scroll is much easier to use and certainly quicker as it
allows you to right click and drag up and down without having to use
the scroll bars. As soon as your mouse stops so does the webpage
(unlike the auto scroll feature).

I would highly recommend that you try out the direct scroll extension
in firefox and mouseimp for all other windows applications. I'm very
surprised that more users don't use this feature. But then again, most
users aren't power users in that they don't take advantage of lots of
helper applications, eg the google toolbar or the googlebar for
firefox (however the googlebar for firefox is severely handicapped for
how I use the the highlight function and thus I can no longer use it
in firefox :( )

Autoscroll turns off with a click of the mousewheel, though.

It doesn't have to do with being a 'power user', but with user
preference. I've used both grab-and-drag scrolling and scrollbars, and
I much prefer scrollbars. If I'm reading a page from top to bottom, I
prefer to use page down again and again rather than scrolliing or
dragging the page down.

Is there a Firefox extension that places a small button somewhere and
allows you to turn off image downloading on the fly (ala Opera IIRC)?
I have browsed several times but haven't found anything.

This would be a winner for those times you visit news sites and don't
want all those crappy ads. A simple a RMB on the image placeholder could
load the picture if desired. This was the one thing I loved most about
Opera.

TIA.

Yes, I have dialup. :-(

Adblock. It's absolutely wonderful.

You can customize it and add your own block lists, or download and use
pre-compiled ones.
