What are code page conversion tables?

Hello,

on the "Advanced" tab of the "Regional- and Language Options", there is a
section "Code Page Conversion Tables". Some of the entries are checked,
some are unchecked, some are checked, but greyed out. My question: What are
code page conversion tables used for? What does it mean, when some of them
are checked, unchecked or greyed out, but checked?

Best regards,

P. W.

The question mark (?) is your friend.

On the Advanced tab of Regional and Language Options in the upper right
corner there is a [?]. Many other Windows items have this.

[[Help is available for each item in this group. Click ? at the top of the
dialog box, and then click the item you want information about.]]

Left click [?] and your cursor turns into a ?, click the item you want to
know about. This will display a help topic if there is one.

This one shows............
[[Lists the code page conversion tables currently installed on your
computer. The selected check boxes indicate which code page conversion
tables are installed. To install an additional code page conversion table,
click to select the check box next to the one you want to install. To remove
one, clear its check box.
Add a code page conversion table if you are using a program that was written
to use that code page. By adding the conversion table, Windows is able to
interpret the letters and other characters used in that program and convert
them to and from Unicode.
Only members of the Administrators group can install or remove code page
conversion tables.]]
