I have a HP with an extended warranty. I've learned that disks fail, thats
why I make backups. I am not having a problem with WGA but if I replace the
disk am I going to have to buy another copy of XP. The copy of XP I have came
from HP when I bought the PC new.

You will not have a problem with WGA as long as the
Windows XP Product Key is "genuine" as it is now.
You will not have to purchase another copy of Windows XP
as long as you use the HP recovery CD which you may
have or can obtain from HP support.

No, you should not have a problem. Replacing the drive should be fine.

Now would be a good time (while you are still in warranty) to take an
inventory of what CD(s) came with your PC.
If you think you are missing a recovery CD, documentation, etc., then call
HP.

Also, what software are you using for making backups and how/where do you
store them?

No, you will not need to buy another copy of XP. The restore disks you have
from HP should work fine. Refer to HP's tech support website for
instructions as to how to install your HP-provided operating system on a
new drive.

Good plan.

Your copy is Legit if it came with a HP computer. You will not likely
have a problem with WGA if you replace the disk at some point.

If it comes to this I have planed to recover from a backup I made from Norton
Ghost. I have the recovery CD set from HP.
Thanks for the response
Jim

For backups I use Norton Ghost 9.0 and store the backups on a USB drive that
is only powered on for backups. I have the manuals and Recovery CD's.
Thanks for the reply.

I have a New DELL B110/1100...it arrived w/the OS stored on a Partition(or
Back-up)...I paid an extra $$99.00 to get the System Disk..I did not want to
use a PC-restore Program from the partition..my PC runs contantly and needs
Physical Matter...I really did not like the PC-restore Program as an OPTION.

If you recovery partition is on the failed harddrive, you can be
screwed. There have been people that have been screwed when trying to
activate.

The next time you buy a computer, you should make sure that you get a
real reinstall CD for XP, or DVD for Vista. Any PC manufacturer that
won't provide it, is just ripping you off.

Then you got ripped off, assuming it's a separate disk that contain's the
same Dell branded everything restore system that is contained on the hidden
partition.

For that money, I would have bought a generic OEM copy.
