Western Digital Raptor SATA Drive

I am considering buying an Internal Western Digital Raptor Drive that has
16mb Cache and 10,000 RPM. Does anyone have any experience with this hard
drive? It is on sale at Bestbuy and I am really interested because they say
it's the fastest SATA drive in the world.

Anyone have any comments?

I've been using a 37GB S-ATA Raptor as my boot drive for the last two years
with no problems. They run hotter and cost quite a bit more. If it doesn't
burn up, you should see a substantial increase in performance.

Actually, the cost has dropped considerably. Its on sale at Bestbuy for
199.00 for a 150gb drive.

I am concerned about the heat. I am already running very hot. I have to
leave the air cond on most of the time to keep from over heating.

Its hardly the fastest,actually it runs at a slower transfer rate than many
(150MB/s
),compared to say,seagate,that runs at 7200rpm 250GB runs at (300MB/s)
transfer
rate,yet only costs about 100.00 + a 5 yr warranty,+ 16MB cache.10,000 rpm
doesnt look all that great now.....

Hay man...that is symply not true....
The SATAII-Interface with THEORETICLY POSSIBLE 300MB or Gb per second, won't
make any HDD that fast....because that's mechanical still not realised.
Actually, EVERY single harddrive won't even manage 150MB/Gb per second...
In fact, the WD Raptor HDDs ARE the fastest around!

For the heat-problem....ever considerd buying another fan? There are some
around with something around 20dB, so you won't hear them in most cases...

Andrew, the burst rate is hardly comparable to the sustained rate which
is the important number in a drive used for backup purposes.

So the majority of you seem to think that the Raptor IS the fastest,
Correct?

I am not going to use it in a RAID 0 config. All I need is 150 gig and I am
sure I don't need more performance than what ONE raptor offers.

Is the 16mb of Cache a big benefit?

It won't hurt anything, remember it's only 16 MB.

Ok, and finally, does anyone know if the WD Raptor supports NCQ? NCQ will
only work on AHCI or RAID modes.
