Welcome Screen does not display usernames on resuming from Hiberna

I have an HP laptop with Windows XP SP2 (all the latest updates), which I put
into hibernation 2 nights before. Now when I turn ON the laptop, the Welcome
Screen appears, but does not show the Usernames. I just have one username
anyway, but I cant login as no usernames can be seen. I tried the 'double
Cntrl-Alt-Del' to get the traditional Logon window.. but that doesnt work
too. Safe mode also has the same problem.. No usernames shown..
Cntrl-Alt-Del doesnt work.

The Welcome Screen is only showing the Windows XP logo on the blue
background.. it doesnt even show the "Shutdown computer" option on the lower
left corner! I didnt make any changes to the laptop (hardware-wise) after
going into hibernation 2 nights ago.. except that I had my external
hard-drive plugged in when I went into hibernation.. which was NOT plugged in
when I tried to resume today. I dont know if this should make a difference,
though!

I had the same problem with Hibernation before.. and I had to re-install XP
(and all software) from scratch. Good thing I take data backups of my system
regularly.. but I dont take image backups.. so I will have to install all
software and programs again...!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.. if I can recover my system and login
properly.. it will save me hours of labour installing XP and all other
software!

Everyone.. Thanks a bunch for anything and everything you can share...
Vinay.

I was once locked out of my computer by an accident on my part. The way it
was solved was by shutting down then opening the computer in safe mode. To do
this, as the computer is starting up you keep pressing the F8 key. If you can
open in safe mode, you should, from the Start button, be able to see Help and
Support. Open it and find System Restore. Then, if it is available to you
find a System Restore point for a day before the hibernation of 2 nights ago.
If you can activate it, restore to that point. The computer should then close
down and re-start. Then you should, if I am right, see your system in correct
mode.

If you try this, please tell me know how you get on. It worked for me.

Hi guys..

Thats the whole problem.. I couldn't even get to Safe mode, so I couldnt do
System Restore.. I think I wrote that in my post! But anyway.. I searched
the web quite a lot yesterday, and finally after trying out several
solutions.. had to 'Repair' my Windows installation (Windows Recovery Console
didnt work too!). That way.. I didnt loose my programs.. everything is the
same as it was before. Only Outlook has a glitch now, but otherthan that,
everything else is fine.

Thanks a bunch for your help.. though!
