Weird file extension

I believe this could be a security issue. My computer has a number of files
in the root level of the C: drive that have the extension of .SA9. I don't
know where they came from and no application on the machine is associated
with them. A virus check reports no problems and Adaware doesn't list them
as problems either. I want to remove them but I first want to identify
their origin.
 
SA9 is likely the map files for the latest version (or one of the latest
versions) of Delorme's Street Atlas or another one of their programs.
