Hello. I recently ran into a problem with Windows Mail in Vista. Last
Wednesday everything was going fine in Windows Mail. I was sending and
receiving all morning long. At around 1pm the program started reporting this
error.

" Account: 'webmail.sitewhirks.com', Server: 'mail.dankain.com', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the
mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error
Number: 0x800CCC90"

Since then we have not been able to log on to our emails via Windows Mail.
The other weird thing is that we can not access the web based login SSL page
for our email either. Whenever we try to use the webpage login the browser
reports the connection was reset or timeout. Then no page loads. This happens
in IE and Firefox.

So I went home and and tried to access the web login page.......... no
problem.. it loaded for me and I logged in.

I dont understand what is making outlook (windows mail) not able to
login......... and why all of a sudden we can not get to the web login from
any of our computers here at work.

We do not run any software firewall....... I did not update any programs
that day. I even turned off our AVG suite to see if it was creating the
errors.

We checked with our webhosting/email server company and all of our
outlook/windows mail settings have not changed.

Help please. This is the weirdest error I have ever experienced. I have no
clue what would cause Windows Mail to all of a sudden stop working after
being used all morning and prevent the web login page from loading.

The error message is a dead giveaway - "ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server". You
have AVG and its setup to scan your email. Uninstall AVG, then do a custom
re-install and DO NOT install any form of email scanner features/components.
See if the problem persists. If you can't connect to webmail from work, but
can from home, you likely have a firewall issue at work. From where I am,
'mail.dankain.com' responds on port 110 to a TELNET connection, so its there
and available

Note that the only relationship that Outlook has to Windows Mail is that
they're both email clients; otherwise, they are entirely different
applications.

Your problem is caused by the AVG antivirus program.
Chances are, you installed AVG antivirus using its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

I can't address your web-based issue, since it is not Windows Mail
related. WM has no affect on web browsers. Suffice it to say, if web access
fails, this could indicate a server issue which could also affect WM's ability
to work with that server.
