When I turn on my computer a box pops up asking to run a cpl elevated. My
only options are continue or cancel. I always cancel, but i would like to
solve the problem. There is a details box and when i click it i get the
following:

"C:\windows\system32\runlegacycplelevated.exe"
shell32.dll, control_rundll "stacgui.cpl" page=portmap

Does anyone know why this happens and how to make it stop? i have run my
virus scanner and spysweeper and no alerts or infections come up. someone
please help. i have been researching and asking for help on this for months
now. Thank you for helping me whoever takes the time. i really appreciate it.

Since you've been researching this for months, you must know that this
Control Panel applet belongs to SigmaTel audio. Since SigmaTel Audio is
onboard audio, contact your motherboard mftr.'s tech support or, if you
have an OEM machine like Dell or HP, contact the OEM's tech support.

Do updated audio drivers help? Have you tried this? If not, you might
want to do that first. Get drivers from either the motherboard mftr. or
the OEM. As a workaround, if this is a desktop machine you might just
purchase a PCI sound card with Vista-compatible drivers and install it.
Don't forget to disable onboard sound from the BIOS.

The problem with waiting two months to deal with the issue is that it's
too long ago to be able to answer the The First Question Of
Troubleshooting (what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?) so you can't undo whatever it was that happened back
then.

Since I don't know anything about your computer (from big OEM like Dell,
built for you locally, etc.), see the general information about drivers
below and take the parts that are applicable to you.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them back:

Geek - http://tinyurl.com/346lox
