try to modify this file for my use. Incidentally, any tips on how to
customize it for other freeware that we use? Does one need to have
programming knowledge or with a bit of hacking and common sense, anybody
can do it?

Anybody should be able to do it - no programming knowledge required.
Just paste the URL in the Edit tab and click Get Code. I look at the
actual web page first to see where they explicitly reference the latest
version and then find that in the HTML code. If you have problems, let
me know.

I purposely excluded things like Ad Aware and Spybot since they have
their own update features.

I forgot Ant Movie Catalog, so I'm going to add that now. :-)
