Webcams and XP

Scott

I'm interested in adding a webcam to my 2GHz XP Pro system to do some
videoconfereing with relatives. The best one seems to be the "Logitech
QuickCam Pro 4000". But I've read customer reviews in several places warning
that the software package installs adware on your computer. Even cnet.com
warned about annoying popups appearing on the screen. Other users claim
the installation corrupted their OS. Others rave about this camera. Are there
some real potential pitfalls in using a webcam like this? I don't want to mess
up my computer.

Thanks!
Scott

Hi Scott,

Details on what's in the box:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,crid=1705,contentid=5042,detail=2

Basically, the complaints are with all the little extras, and 99% of people
just insert the setup disk and install everything on it. If you just install
the drivers, and ignore the rest of the stuff, then you will have exactly
what you want. I like logitech, and have used many of their products - but
like many manufacturers, there are always extra things on the disks that you
don't need. How many times have you installed a game or program, only to
find an icon for AOL has been added to the system? If you don't use or
install it, then it doesn't become an issue.

Yes, what Rick just said above. I have the Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000, and
all I installed was the drivers, not all the extra unnecessary garbage on
the disc, and I have no problems with spyware or pop-ups associated with
it. By the way, the camera works great, clear picture, and works well in
low-light conditions. Avoid the cheaper Logitechs though, you need a
spotlight, and even then, the picture is fuzzy. The 4000 is the way to go!
