Web site charges

I built a web site for a client who has now decided that she would rather
pay a professional to do her site. At the time we started this site she knew
that I was new at building sites and called and emailed numerous times until
we had it the way she wanted it. I have no problem with her decision, but
she wants to know how much she owes me so she can pay me.

My questions are:
How do I transfer the .com to her name?
How do I burn the web to CD so I can send it to her and be done with it?
What do I do about the hosting site I am currently paying for?
Thanks for any advice you can give me. I am pretty darn confused at this

How do I transfer the .com to her name?

You registered it in your name? That's mistake #1 if you did. You need to
contact the registrar through the account that you created when you
initially registered the name, and change the details of the registrant.

Just copy the site from your disk to the CD. Her professional can figure it
out from there. Or, if the site is already online, you would only need to
give her the files that are not on the site, like perhaps photoshop files,
or image files used as parent to some of the graphics you have used.

Cancel it after you have transferred everything to her.

Is she looking for a professional developer, hmmm? 8)

Guess I'll have to get in touch with the registrar. Never doing that one
again Live & learn, I guess.
I'm waiting to hear back whether she wants me to keep the site going and
pay me the hosting fees or not.
I like your idea of simply sending her all the relevant files, and I'm sure
she should be able to use the CD that I'll create.
What do you suppose a Web pro will charge her? and using my work?

It's hard to say. She should prepare a request for proposal stating a) what
she wants, and b) what she doesn't like about the current implementation.
Then I could give a better estimate.

Using your work would ameliorate the final estimate some, provided she is
satisfied with the look.

I will pass it on to her, although I wouldn't expect that she'll be doing
anything for some time as she said she is super busy and the web site is not
a high priority right now....go figure

She should be paying you for the time you took to create the site. If she
wants to keep any images that you made or bought she should pay for them and
if you made them she either pays more for the custom graphics or you keep
the copyright. The design is your copyright until she either pays for that
too. Doing the work and her keeping the design after you leave are two
different things. Also you should never had paid the hosting fees you want
all that back in full and the work you did in setting it up and maintaining
it should have paid you maintenance fees too.

When I did a site for someone for the first time I agreed upon a price ... a
flat fee... and I did not charge for graphics I made, they understood they
were my guinea pigs too.... because this was your first time and your client
understood this you should give her a reduced fee as she has to wait while
you figure out new stuff .... work out what your time is worth.. in other
words the job you would normally do what do you get paid an hour .. work out
how many hours you worked and all the other stuff above ... then I'd half
it.. I would bill her separately for the hosting as that is her problem if
she wants a site.

having said all the above I'm not a professional web designer I just like
using FrontPage I just wanted to see what it felt like having a client at
the time

I just emailed her a bill for the balance of what she owes me for hosting.
She has been paying me for the hosting. What I have asked her is if she
wants to keep the site up or not, does she want to take over the .com that
is in my name, etc
I am waiting to hear back from her. All of the graphics were hers as they
were photos that she sent of articles she was selling.
The design is mine using her suggestions of colors, fonts, etc, and numerous
emails and phone calls from her asking me to change this or that, etc, etc.
To tell you the truth, I was glad when she decided to end this. I spent
hours each day on the changes she wanted made to the site! She was paying me
$26/hour during the beginning of the build, then it was just minor things
such as updating to the server, etc. But, once she decided she wanted a
shopping cart added I spent many hours trying to please her...actually
bought software & built an entirely new site that I was planning on
formatting to the same look as the original one. So, I was glad to hear she
wants out but angry with myself for being so determined to please someone
that I don't think could ever be pleased.
Lesson learned the hard way...my usual way.
On the bright side, I have a new client that is going to pay me $2000 to
start!

Really hard to say, have seen quotes for similar work run anywhere from
$2500 to $15,000. And to be honest, it is often more work to makeover or
redo a site than to just start from scratch.

I have sent a request to my ex-client before sending her a copy of the web
site. I am in the process of removing it from my hosting site as I write
this.
