Web Settings: No server currently in use

A google search on the exact phrase/topic brings up precisely one result, and no answer

Win XP Pro, IIS 5.1, Frontpage 2002 extensions installed

The server is running, I can navigate to html or asp pages via http://localhost/, via http:/127.0.0.1/ or via http:/webname. everything is present and correct in Internet Information Services MMC snap-in, the Frontpage 2002 Server Administration/Windows SharePoint administration all works, the server is functioning correctly with no problems

If I open a web in Frontpage 2002, and check Tools/Web Settings, I get "No server currently in use". The server extensions version shown is correct, active server pages are enabled in page options, I can think of no logical reason why Frontpage is the only application that doesn't 'see' the server. Frontpage is therefore virtually useless in designing asp pages, at least if I want to be able to use preview mode, recalculate links and quickly preview in browser rather than constantly navigating separately in IE

IIS, FPSE and FP have all been uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, rebooted, you name it, several times and in different orders

So any advice other than "try reinstalling" would be much appreciated :)

Make sure you are opening the web via http in FP.

After starting FrontPage, chose Open Web from the Tools
menu, then specify http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost as
the Web location.

If you specify c:\InetPub\wwwroot, you're opening the site
through the file system and no Web server is involved.
Thus the message: No server currently in use.

Thanks, that was the answer

Reaction 1: "doh, that was a bit obvious"

Reaction 2: "Frontpage should be a bit smarter, it's a FPSE web folder after all, it knows what I meant"

I am having the exact same problem but DON'T have a "web
server" installed. How do you get FP to recognize the
built in web server? I have tried uninstall and install
and never get it to work. I have tried installing IIS and
that doesn't work either. I have tried running
fpsrvwin.exe and it tells me that it won't work and there
is a newer version on this machine

When I do a Tools/Web Settings and it never
shows "Extensions Versions" and "no server currently in
use".

Can someone walk me through this.

You need to Install IIS, then the FP SE, and then Apply the SE to the root web thru IIS to open your local server in FP thru File
Open Web/Site http://localhost/
