Why is it that web browsing with Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11 and
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3 becomes impossible after an hour or so with
both of my laptops having Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and ZoneAlarm
7.0.337.000, but I still can listen to net radio channels (with 128
kbps bitrate) with Winamp 5.35? Both laptops have different
manufacturers (HP and Fujitsu Siemens) and I'm using an ADSL modem
(ZyXEL Prestige 660R-61), a wireless router (D-Link DI-524UP) and a
UPS (MGE Protection Center 500). I don't use the wireless connection
much. If I recall correctly, the other laptop started having the same
problems after some Windows/Microsoft update, but I'm not sure if it's
an update that started causing the problems.

First download these Anti-Malware at the bottom of this post with the free
AVG Anti-virus and installed them on your Computer and update their
definitions.
Go through these cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.

2.... And also for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D
Download and install after installing this software and
update then run a scan in both safe mode and normal:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Run Disk cleanUp and Defrag again in safe mode

Open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [Ok]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
or download the winsock fixer from here:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html
Note: repairing the winsock the same as the command (netsh winsock reset),
both repair the winsock.
HTH.

Tomi,

I'd look at the DNS setup, to start. You can probably listen to Internet radio,
and enjoy other consistent activities, because the IP addresses required are
cached. Browsing though requires constant DNS activity. Check your DNS setup.

But also see what happens if you restart the computer, and don't involve Winamp?
Do you still lose browsing after an hour?

Thanks for your help, nass and Chuck. Today, I didn't have the problem
I mentioned with one of my laptops. I only tested the problem with one
of my laptops today as I only use Winamp with one of them as there is
no need to listen to two net radio stations for me at the same time,
but I did follow part of your instructions already:

I deleted the cache, cookies and history for all my web browsers and
scanned/checked my laptops with the latest updates and using the full
scans with Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic Build 247
(2007-05-10), Ad-Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1, Spybot - Search &
Destroy 1.4, Windows Defender 1.1.1593.0, HijackThis 1.99.1 (the old,
free version), and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0.1 and
didn't find anything suspicious. I also visited the Microsoft Update
web site and checked for high-priority updates (I do have automatic
updates turned on, but I checked the site anyway). I haven't read the
web pages (and other web pages they link to) you have mentioned yet as
it may take some time to read them and follow their instructions, but
I might get back here if I have something to add about my situation.

Update: I had the same problem with both of laptops today and this
worked for me:

C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

But for the other command I think I need administrator rights (for
daily use for security reasons I use a limited account):

C:\>ipconfig /renew

Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area
Connection : Access is denied.

An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network
Connection : Access is denied.
