Cannot browse file/print shares

Hi All,

I am having problems getting two PC's to see each other for windows
networking (file/print sharing). Heres the low down...

- PC A (Laptop) can only see itself when I 'view workgroup computers'
- PC B (Deskto PC) can see both itself, and machine A when I 'view workgroup
computers' But, when I double click on PC A, it says I do not have
sufficient access (Or similar!)
- Both PCs are assigned a 192.168.x.x address by a netgear router with built
in ADSL modem
- Both PCs can ping each other via IP, but not via name
- I have switched off XP firewall on both machines
- PC A has Norton Internet Security installed - Security and Firewall have
been disabled
- The PCs are networked wirelessly - built in adapter on PC A, ext LinkSys
USB adapter on PC B - They both connect to the Internet (Web and email
working OK) via a LinkSys wireless access point, which in turn connects
(ethernet) to the NetGear router with built in ADSL modem. I believe the
router is providing the DHCP addresses
- Both PC's are in the 'workgroup' workgroup
- I have checked and confirmed the names of each PCs

Probem is, as I say that I cannot browse to file/print shares.

Hope someone can help! :)

Regards,

Simon.

Simon,

I'd bet even money that your problem is NIS on PC A. I have advised in one case
where NIS, and NAV, had to be completely un installed - following Symantec anal
removal procedures. Disabling does not always work.

Start by re enabling NIS - then configure it for file sharing - by opening ports
TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other computer
as present in the Local (Trusted) zone.

Since you have a wireless network, you should be using a firewall on both PCs.
So let's see if you can get networking in operation first, then enable the XP
firewall on PC B (and configure it likewise).

p.s. Is that why I'm flabby? Scott Richter strikes again. ;)

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Ahhhh...interesting, just had a very similar reply from a bulletin board
post. I have sent my client instructions on how to check that netbios over
TCP/IP is enabled, and that the computer browser is running - If this doesnt
help I will try what you say as a next step.

Thanks very much for your reply.

Simon.
