WD wants updates when there are none

H

Hilarion

Hi!

Today I started using new Toshiba Satellite A100 - 785 with
Windows Vista Home Basic PL preinstalled. Windows Vista has
WD built in apparently (as a side note - it has Polish version,
when there's no Polish version for Windows XP yet).
The problem is that WD tells me to check for definition
updates. I did and got new definitions, but the warning did not
go away. So I checked again for new definitions, and now it
tells me there are no new definitions, but still the warning
does not go away. I do not have such problems on any other
computers (at home or at work) that use WD (English) on Windows
XP Professional (Polish).
I'm not sure if it's related to the problem described above,
but Norton Protection Center (Symantec's Norton security package
was also preinstalled on this computer, which includes Norton
Antivirus and Norton Internet Security) also reports that I
should update it's databases, and it keeps doing that even
when I updated it with Symantec LiveUpdate (and now the LiveUpdate
tells me that there are no updates available).
And yes, I've used Windows Update to check for system updates
(and other updates - it's configured to do so). There were some
and I installed them and I rechecked to make sure no new updates
appeared, so now Windows Update also reports no updates (which
includes WD updates).
So, to sum up: my Windows Defender and my Norton Protection
Center report that they should be updated even if they really
are updated (as far as I know from their update mechanisms reports).
Similar problem is also mentioned on this forum:
http://www.vista64.net/forums/vista-general/46150-windows-defender.html
If anyone has any idea how to resolve this issue, then please
do not hesitate to post here, even if the solution is weird or
complicated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Kamil 'Hilarion' Nowicki

PS.: My English is very far from perfect, so if something is not
clear, then please ask - I'll try to clarify.
PPS.: The problem appeared in Polish version of WD, so I'm not
sure if I translated correctly the WD messages to English
and/or if I used official terminology.

It's pretty much of a guess, but if you can run this on your system to see
what this line command reports about your WMI repository:

Run a cmd prompt as administrator.

type the following command: winmgmt /verifyrepository

If it runs at all it may tell you if your repository is not consistent, but
I'm not sure it will even run on that system.

Hello Kamil,

Congratulations with the new Toshiba.

Do you reboot after you got the new definitions ?

I have almost the same setup like you, Vista Premium, Norton Internet
Security, up dated up today. And so far I don't have any problems or
warnings.

Please check if you have this with WD:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1505.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2405.0
Definition Version: 1.17.2444.9

Don't worry about your English, yours is better than my. And your post is
easy to follow.

I hope this post is helpful.

Hi Dave M,

Vista don't have the box for Run, now we have to use the Help & Support.

I type yours intructions, and no dice.

This Vista is a new ball to play (and learn) ;-(

....so how do you get what they used to call a dos box in Win95? or what
they were calling Command Prompt in XP?

The box where it has "C:\ " and you can enter typewritten commands like the
good old days... GUI not !

What the heck is Help & Support? sounds like pay as you go commands... lol

Engel try this

Shortcut to make the Run Box Appear in Vista

Place the Run Box Back on the Start Menu:

1. Right click the Start button
2. Left Click Properties
3. Click Customize button beside the Start Menu selection
4. Scroll down and check the checkbox on Run Command
5. Click OK and OK
Now it should appear under Help and Support in your Start Menu
then check this out- lots of good stuff for vista

I should have suspected that they hid it. If all these things were hidden
and there was only one big red button labeled "Shut Down" there wouldn't be
all these problems you know. ;) Thanks Robin, by the way.

So out of curiosity, what happens on a working Vista if you try the
"winmgmt /verifyrepository" command? Does it return anything? I believe
that command isn't available in XP... that's why I ask, as it returns
nothing for me.

Oh ok... The command prompt in XP (entered by Start > Run then typing
"CMD") was scrollable... in other words you could go back up the screen
using the scroll bar... perhaps it's not the same on Vista.

It runs and tells me that WMI repository is consistent (my own translation).

Thanks, but it's not my personal computer. It was bought by the company
I work for as a first computer capable of running Windows Vista. We
need the Vista to make sure the applications our company is making
will work OK on Vista.
For some reason I was the one ordered to make sure the system is
OK and well protected, get to know it and explain to others how to
use it.

Do you reboot after you got the new definitions ?

Yes, I did many times. (Some Norton Security updates required it, some
Windows updates required it, I wanted to check restart times so I also
did it just to try. And yes, those were restarts for sure, not just
sleep mode or hibernation. I even started it in emergency mode or
whatever it's called in English, to check if it'll help. I also tried
with UAC turned off. Nothing worked.)

I hope I'll manage to keep the readability level, because I often tend to
be quite clear at first and then get closer and closer to babbling.

If I only knew how to do it in Outlook Express 6.0 :/ As I see it, it's
impossible from OE 6. It'd probably be possible in the OE replacement
available in Vista, but I prefer using Windows XP Pro than Windows Vista
Home Basic. At least now - it may change in time (but still I'd prefer
some more advanced version of Vista, where I'd be able to manually
assign users to groups etc.).

I hope this post is helpful.

I also do, but even if it does not, I still thank you for trying and for
your time.

Let us know how it works out.

It's still as it was, but there's still much time, and this case is
not critical, because apparently WD and Symantec software are up to
date and only the notification mechanisms are not aware of that.

OK, thanks for looking, that means it's in good condition... so it's not
the problem. Worth a check anyway, sorry.

You have nothing to be sorry about. Thank you for trying. I had no idea
that WMI repository was used by WD. Now I know and maybe that knowledge
will help me some time.

I've read some posts on this newsgroup about Norton Symantec security
software and I decided to try those things:

1. I uninstalled the Symantec software, and as Robinb suggested, used
their removal tool and CCleaner to clean the system from any remains
of the software. The issue with Windows Defender remained.
2. I tried your suggestion from another thread to rollback WD definition
database (and engine version) to original state using:
"mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All". The rollback worked, but when
I ordered WD to check for updates, it did update but is still
suggesting to check for updates.

If you have any other suggestions, then please do not hesitate to post
them. And thank you again for your help.

Hi Dave M,
OK, thanks for looking, .......................... Worth a check anyway, sorry.

Yeap, "Worth a check anyway", this is the result in this end:

C:\Users\Engel>winmgnt /verifyrepository
WMI repository verificayion failed
Error code: 0x80041003
Facility: WMI
Description: Access denied

I found this KB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/282949

But this KB don't applies to Vista.

So, now I have something of my own to resolve. Any sugestions ?

I believe you have to give yourself temporary UAC elevated privilege under
Vista... although I don't understand it fully, having never been there:

from
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa822854.aspx#user_account_control_settings

User Account Control Settings

Starting with Windows Vista, Under User Account Control (UAC) access token
filtering can affect which operations are allowed in WMI namespaces or what
data is returned. Under UAC, all accounts in the local Administrators
group, run with a standard user access token, also known as UAC access
token filtering. An administrator account can run a script with elevated
privilege-"Run as Administrator".

That information was referenced from the Winmgmt documentation for Vista
here:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa394525.aspx
