Leaving out the time it'll take to create two versions in the first place, one
for each language, how much time do you think you'll spend on editing and
maintaining the two presentations? How often will they change and how big will
the changes be?

Sometimes it takes more time to set up an automatic solution than the solution
will save. ;-)

One possibility is to put your text into an Excel sheet and link from it to the
PPT file. Edit the text in the Excel sheet and the PowerPoint will update
itself the next time you open it.

There's also something like our commercial PPTMerge addin
http://merge.pptools.com

With it, you could set up an Excel sheet like so:

:LANGUAGE: :HELLO: :GOODBYE:
English Hello Goodbye
French Bonjour Au revoir
Spanish Buenos dias Adios

Then in the "master" PPT file, you could create a text box with:

:HELLO:
Welcome to the :LANGUAGE: version of our presentation

When the data is merged into the slides, that would give you three
presentations, one each for English, French and Spanish.
