I attempted to install Windows XP Home Edition over
Windows 98 SE. It gave me an upgrade report stating that
the following were hardware located on my current system
were not compatible with XP:

Network adapters
WAN Miniport (ATW)

and

Network Connection Protocol
NetBEUI

I stopped installing when I saw this. My question is
whether or not installing this new software will interfere
with my ability to get online. I am not computer savvy and
I don't know what these two connection devices control.
Please give me some advice. Thanks so much!

I wouldnt worry about those two notices since the will be
updated when you install XP. the only consideration is to
make sure that the correct/Same protocols are installed
for your networking when it is finished (if you connect
to another computer to get your internet access).

I'm sorry, but I don't have enough information about the WAN Miniport
adapter to say what its effect is. It might be related to an Ethernet
adapter installed on your computer. It might be related to a version
of the AOL software.

NetBEUI is a network protocol, but it has nothing to do with getting
online. Internet access uses the TCP/IP protocol.

NetBEUI is available as an un-supported protocol in XP, meaning that
Microsoft hasn't tested it and won't give technical support if there's
a problem with it. If the existing network uses NetBEUI for File and
Printer Sharing, you can either install NetBEUI on XP, or you can
remove NetBEUI from all computers and use TCP/IP for File and Printer
Sharing. I've written a web page with more information:
