I attempted to install Windows XP Home Edition over
Windows 98 SE. It gave me an upgrade report stating that
the following were hardware located on my current system
were not compatible with XP:

Network adapters
WAN Miniport (ATW)

and

Network Connection Protocol
NetBEUI

I stopped installing when I saw this. My question is
whether or not installing this new software will interfere
with my ability to get online. I am not computer savvy and
I don't know what these two connection devices control.
Please give me some advice. Thanks so much!

You will need XP drivers for your modem, or you can just replace the modem
with a unit that is supplied with XP drivers..

The WAN miniport (ATW) is for your AOL adapter. You can delete it. Install
XP. Then launch your AOL software which will then rebuild the adapter (make
sure the version of AOL you're using is compatible with XP first).

NetBEUI is usually present for a file and printer sharing on a small
network. You may want to consult with the person that setup your network
before removing this and before upgrading. XP will use TCP/IP for these
same functions. It's unsupported but NetBEUI can be used if it's absolutely
necessary for the network. However, use the version that is on the XP CD
(add it back after XP is up and running).
