Warning Files and Settings doen't always work!

Just reinstalled XP on new hard disk. Files and settings wizard used - have
files on disk. Now I cannot recover them. Researched this and tried using
fastconv.

Get "Source store is invalid" error message.
Fastconv log says:
Error Source store is invalid. [ERROR=13 (Dh)].

Assume at this stage I'm not going to get these files back.
Very dissapointed frustrated etc. These files are sitting on my disc and I
cannot access them!
This is not a one-off as a quick search on the net will reveal.
Let this be a warning to unsuspecting users of this utlity.

Keith,
Does your new computer (or the one to which you are bringing the old
settings) have Service Pack 2 installed already, as I have found there is a
difference between the files and settings wizard on SP2 than the one on pre
SP2. (ie if you had SP2 on the old computer, but you have no SPs or only SP1
on the new one, upgrading to SP2 wil fix it.

If they both have SP2, or the one being transferred to has SP2 but the old
one has no SPs or a lower SP then in the "Optional" Windows updates there is
an upgrade to the Files and settings wizard that stops some of these
incompatibilities. (I.e. do a Windows Update on the new computer and upgrade
the Files & Settings app and see if that suddenly allows you to do the
transfer).
