Want to take apart Ext. Maxtor HDD

Hi All,

Got me 2 x 250gig OneTouch Maxtor external drives. The time has come to
take apart the external enclosure, and use the drives in a RAID 1
config on a PC.

Anyhow, I really wanted to know if there was anything to be especially
careful/aware of when doing this. My main paranoia is that once the
case is off, the drives are going to have some kind of dodgy
proprietary interface/power connectors!

Thanks!!!

Bad move.

Make sure they are cooled properly, they dont like poor cooling.

Nar, they are completely standard.

Very, very unlikely. Just not cost effective.

Thanks for all the help guys... will make sure they're cooled properly.

Always seem to learn in retrospect... bad habit!! =)

I agree; I had one that lasted just a few days past the 3 month warranty
period, and when taken apart it was obvious that the case was designed
primarily for RF suppression and did a poor job of cooling the drive,
which was cooked. I suspect the drive was running hotter than normal,
which wouldn't have been a problem in a standard drive bay.

Once out, however, the drive is a standard IDE drive (with a serial number
which identifies it as a One-Touch drive, by the way).

I don't think I'd run two of these drives in a RAID 0 configuration; RAID 1
for stuff I didn't worry about too much, maybe.

(I'm not a fan of Maxtor drives, having been burned by them several times).

Very, very unlikely.

Have "very very" much fun explaining Syquest EZ drives
with parallel port connectors on the interface board, child.

No way to convert those to IDE.
Just not cost effective.

Syquest obviously were of a different opinion.

Why would I Folkert? They are a different case, as should
be obvious even to somebody of your limited faculties.
