Want to create a partition

Please bear with me here, this morning I was on win98,
and tonight I brought home a new machine with WinXP home
edition.

Before I start moving in, installing anything, etc, I
want to create a new partition. It doesn't need to be
bootable, mostly it will be used for data storage and
photoshop swap file, but it will be most of the hard
drive. The help files offer two options, using the
command line or the computer management panel.

The command line info in the help file says that I'll
need to assign the drive letter. "You must use the assign
command to assign a drive letter", but how? There's no
further info on using this command.

With the computer management help info, I'm fine until it
says to "right click on an unallocated region of a basic
disk". Hmmm, nothing I right click on gives me any choice
such as a "new partition". Where do I find this?

I've searched the knowledge base and these forums. Other
than one person's recommendation to use 3rd party
partition software (from back in august), I've found no
helpful info.

How can I make this partition?

They way i would do it is to re-install windows from
scratch, using the xp boot disk and in the blue screen
where it says install xp on which oartition delete all
partitions and then create 2 one of which for xp, this
eliminates using 3rd party software and should be fairly
straight forward!!

Good luck mate

Apparetnly I didn't search ALL the forums, just found
that the hardware forum would be more appropriate. Sorry!

Unless you have a machine that has XP already installed in a partition
smaller than the drive you will need third party software to shrink the
partition and make a new one. Not many preinstalled systems come with
the disk either divided or with a 'restore' that allows you to do so.
This means Partition Magic ver 8, or BootIT NG, from
http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)
