Wandering Mouse Cursor

Does anyone know what might be the problem when all of a
sudden my mouse is jumping all over the display. Can't
keep it in one place. I assume it is a driver issue of
some other software that is affecting the mouse.

is this a notebook computer with built-in pointing device, like trackpoint or touchpad?

or

desktop computer with external mouse, what interface (USB, serial), mechanical (ball) or optical (bright light on bottom), what brand of mouse, when does this happen, how often, does there seem to be a pattern to the jumping behaviour, before/after it begins, is it reproducible, can you make it happen? be specific, we can help you better that way.

Add running video adapter at a refresh rate unsupported by the monitor,
especially if on a laptop.

Me too! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 and I like to use the pointin
stick, but after a bit, the cursor starts wandering in one directio
and the touch pad doesn't work. I have to push my finger all over th
pad for a few seconds to regain control again and stop the cursor. Th
folks at Dell tell me this is a windows xp feature in case the pointin
stick is naturally pointing in a certain direction but it's ver
annoying and there must be a fix out there. Does anyone know of one?
Thank you, MD

This is a feature of the pointing stick. Rather than pushing harder,
release pressure for a few seconds and let it wander, then nudge the
pointer back where it belongs and release it. It will settle down.

Disable the touch pad so when you brush it, it doesn't interfere with
your pointing stick.
