I found that when in desktop, I click properties then select wallpaper, my
computer hang for munites before it can open it. It loads all my pictures in
My Pictures folder. I didn't have such problem before. Is it possible to
address the problem (to clean up the long long background list) without
moving the files to other folder?

Short and sweet answer is No they'll have to be moved.

i had this problem too, what happened to me is that the desktop.ini file from
"my pictures" was missin, although i suppose if it is corrupt it would do the
same. to solve the problem I copied the deskyop.ini file from c:\documents
and settings\all users.windows\documents\my pictures. so far so good. all i
have is all of the original default backgrounds and my current personad
background. no more "my pictures" and all of the subdirectories. What a
relief, i use multiple sub folders for my digital picturesm so you can
imagine how many files i have
