100s of pictures appear in Display Properties, Desktop Tab; how2cl

on Display Properties, Desktop Tab, it shows hundreds of
my pictures from My Pictures folder, though I never used any of them as
backgrounds. This is a recent change, but I have no idea what the cause is.
It does not show every picture in my My Pictures. Any ideas? I want all the
extranoues crap cleared out, it takes a long time to load that tab now.

Thanks!

It was my problem before, the only way I found to correct it was to move tHe
pictures out of My Pictures folder. I even modified the registry
HKLM_Software_Microsoft_Windows_Current Version_WallPaperDir to point to
another directory. System Restore did not help. It happened when I changed my
wall paper and selected one from My Pictures folder ever since all the
pictures in the folder appeared as background choices.

Taking your hint, I used tweakui to change what folder was called "My
Pictures", and that fixed it. But I did that as a momentary fix, and want the
original My Pictures location known as My Pictures, so I returned it to the
original location, then sure enough, the 100s of pics return in Display
Properties.

Googling on this topic reveals claims by Microsoft that this is the default
functionality, which is absolute B.S., because until the last few weeks, this
functionality never was the case on my system, and I've been running XP in
this present configuration for about 5 years. Something has changed, be it an
XP update or my recent install of Acrobat 9.

After reading through the long list of suggestions here:

It came down to one thing that worked for me (others found other workarounds
that worked):

=========================================

Running a registry fix that prevents XP Wallpaper from looking in My
Pictures for wallpaper candidates:

Zipped together at the following locations are:
README.txt
DISABLE_My_Pictures_In_Wallpaper_List.reg
ENABLE_My_Pictures_In_Wallpaper_List.reg

Still, the REASON or CAUSE for this anomaly, that seems to randomly crop up
on XP machines over time, is unexplained. Some say this is normal XP
behavior, yet no one exhibits such behavior until one random day... Something
in XP is quirky, regardless of what the gurus say.

Anyhow, by running DISABLE_My_Pictures_In_Wallpaper_List.reg my problem
seems now resolved, with no apparent loss in functionality elsewhere.
