upon start up, xp fonts big, major glitch

I've not changed anything on my system for at least a week, and have shutdown
and restarted every day, but today, upon start up, all the fonts on the
desktop icons are big, all the start menu items are also big to the point
they are cut off by the start menu's edge.

Possibly related, on Display Properties, Desktop Tab, it shows hundreds of
my pictures from My Pictures folder, though I never used any of them as
backgrounds.

Any ideas?

boot into safe mode
and see if the problem
appears there as well.

It seems the below fixes were permanent, but I am concerned that it happened
at all, and keep expecting to see the problem return with every reboot. But
for now, its fixed...

My fix: enter Display Properties, under Themes tab, reset to Win XP Theme,
hit apply. Then go to Appearance tab, click Advanced, select Icon as the
Item, then insure Font is Tahoma size 8. If it is, select something else, hit
ok, then return in that menu, go back to the Tahoma 8 and hit okay again. Hit
apply to exit Display Properties. Then restart. (I killed explorer using task
manager then re-ran it for the same result.)

Ah, here's exactly what I did: XP Theme was already selected, but I selected
"Classic" then applied, then "Windows XP" and applied, and it seemed to crash
something, got a red warning popup. But tried again, and seems that the fonts
on the start menu fixed, but the desktop did not. I went into advanced
settings and tried to manually change the fonts for the desktop icons but
whatever I selected, and applied, it would not change. I then killed Explorer
using task manager, restarted it, and it seems fine.
