Quick Launch behaves as if shortcuts' links broken

My Quick Launch buttons sometimes behave as if the shortcuts’ links are
broken (i.e. when I click upon a Quick Launch button, the program (such as
MS-Word) does not get start up. For example, if I thereafter go and click
Start, then Programs, then Microsoft Office, then MS-Word, up pops MS-Word
(alternatively clicking upon the appropriate Desktop icon will have MS-Word
launched too) – the click upon the Quick Launch button never resulted in
launching MS-Word. I do not know what event causes this “broken shortcutâ€
behavior to occur. The Quick Launch buttons can be reactivated by logging
off and on or restarting XP-Pro. Is there a way to refresh/restart the Quick
Launch buttons without logging off and or restarting Windows?

Just curious have you made any recent change(s) to your internet service
provider?

Do any of the Windows oriented Quick Launch icons work (IE, Desktop,
Explorer) or is it just programs you have installed?

All of the Quick Launch icons (shortcuts) are just regular type
shortcuts in a folder. That folder is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Name>\Application Data\Microsoft
\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

When it is broken, browse to that folder and see the icons for Quick
Launch. Try to double click one of the broken ones there and see what
happens.

Before doing that make sure you have no malware on your system.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these three free
malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
AVG (AVG): http://free.avg.com/
