wallpaper on roaming profile does not display

Hi there. I have an issue which seems to be a small
matter to system administrator but is considered a very
big problem to users.

I have a Windows 2000 SP4 Active Directory (two domain
controllers) setup. I have configured that the user home
folder and roaming profile to be located on another NAS
server (as storage). Clients are either Windows 2000 Pro
or XP Pro.

The problem is on roaming profile:
The icons, files/folders that users created on the
desktop does get roaming, followed and displayed. Their
nice wallpaper photo (Desktop Wallpaper) also get
roaming, followed but it was NOT displayed.

If I right-click on desktop - Properties - Desktop tab, I
notice that the settings did apply, but it was not
displayed on the desktop until you click OK. This mean
each time the users change their wallpaper, the next time
when they logon on another workstation, they need to
click on Properties - Desktop and reapply.

This happened on those wallpaper which are gif or jpeg.
If they select the normal bmp under Windows folder, it is
consistent (it followed and displayed).

I thought it might be a problem with locating the profile
on the NAS server, so I change the location of profile to
be located locally on one of the domain controller.
Problem still there.

Woule appreciate anyone could help if they experience and
solve this. Thanks.

Regards,
PeySha

Do you see any userenv error messages in the clients' event logs? Where is
the gif/jpeg file they want to use located?

HI Lanwench,

I've even seen this error in XP running the XP class. Kind of strange, you
have to do exactly what Peysha said, is to rt-click on the desktop and go
into properties to get it. Can't remember if it was a bmp or something else.
Also can't recall if the courseware said anything about it, since it's been
about 4 months since I last ran the class.

A friend of mine (Rob Elder, MVP in the networking group) just suggested to
me to try disabling Themes in XP. We're both not sure, and don't have a
setup currently to test it, but give would like Peysha to try it and let us
know.

Hi Ace,

I have tried disabling Themes in XP (ie. click on best
performance and disable themes services) but still
getting same result. I have put the picture onto user
home folder and that ain't work as well.

I have now convert the jpeg and gif file to bmp, and it
works. This is an extra step to the users and users
might not buy it unless Microsoft said so "this is by
design ..." . Is there any Microsoft article
saying "roaming profile desktop wallpaper only work on
bmp" so that I can just show to the users so that they
can at least release me for now ? :)

Thanks.

Sorry, there is none that I know of. We were conjecturing to the possible
cause. At least from what you're saying, then we now know it's based on file
type!

:)
