Waiting and Waiting after getting main screen

Seems for some reason suddenly we get to the welcome screen and that is fine,
AT FIRST, then click on a user and get a blue screen with the hour glass and
wait and wait and wait for the page to load. Then FINALLY after about 3 - 4
minutes it loads. Once you are loaded and you get your screen up everything
seems to work fine.

If you switch users, again the blue screen with the hour glass and more
waiting, then if you switch back you are no longer logged in.

When signing off takes FOREVER to save settings and shut down. There are
even times with Wolfinstein game that only the screen shuts down and not the
hard drive. What is going on. I have backed everything up, today, because I
am ready to crash the computer or call DELL and get the help I need or just
redo the puter like it were new.

Does anyone have an answer?

Try running Disk CleanUp in all user profiles.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on
your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information.

What is your CPU processor speed? How much RAM memory? Right click on
your My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information.

One of your daily delays could be a scheduled anti-virus scan.

You may have unnecessary applications loading at Start-Up. Use Autoruns
to see what does start:

What are your anti-spyware arrangements?

Gerry,

Thanks for the info and help. I have done and always do on a regular basis
the disk cleanups, defrags, registry cleaner, etc.

I DID change my restore point from max to about mid point (6%) tho. My
Commit Charge total is 396480 Limit is 251576 Peak is 471948

I have a Pentium(R)4 3.00GHz 2.99 GHz Processor 1.00 GB Ram. My hard
disk is 144 GB and I have 107GB free space. There are 53 processes running,
but I know of one that I did delete and is still showing but denies me access
to delete.

I run Zone Alarm anti-virus and anti-spam. I have it set to scan once a
week, or do it more often if I feel necessary (manually)

Thanks for you help Gerry, but it is still running the same way.

"I know of one that I did delete and is still showing but denies me
access to delete." More information please.

A solution that often helps with a slow shutdown.

What are your pagefile settings?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports please. Indicate which also appear in a previous
boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
