Wait (hourglass) every 2 minutes???

Hi,

My computer blew up last week. Bought a new one. Windows XP/P4/HT/512.

While I'm working on or off line, no games or printers or other untilities running, just about every 2 minutes the "wait" hourglass appears next to my arrow/cursor for about 3 seconds then stops then comes back like a clock every 2 minutes.

I've opened my processes window to see what happens and there seems to be activity centered around "svchost" running process.

I've clicked on my LAN icon and watched the send/receive activity, and it increases when this little wait hourglass pops up.

Like many new machines it has Norton running in the background. Could this be the culprit? It worries me a little if it's a security leak of some kind. Windows firewall is activated. Thanks in advance.

This link might help > it has a handy little download for XP Home so you can
get a detailed list of running processes & which services are running under
svchost.

Hey,

Thanks for the tip. Don't really know what I'm looking at in processes running under SVCHOST, but they are mostly all network-connected "lanman" or "lanmanserver" having to do with sharing files or a printer over a network. I use the same setup as the blown box - SBCDSL/D-Link Router - never had this darn thing before. It's annoying and troubling at the same time.

I opened the Task Manager/Networking Tab and then just waited. Each time the hourglass appeared the Network Utilization jumped up 3 or 4 % for a couple of seconds then dropped back to mainly 0%.

Something in the background is running or checking every 2 minutes - not randomly - which makes me think I should be able to turn it off. I don't file or print share with the other computer upstairs, so maybe I can shut this off? Hope someone can help me figure it out. I had enough fun last week trying to save my last one. Thanks again for the help.

Task Manager is useful but you could look
at another freeware utility Process Explorer, which provides similar
information but adds that little bit extra towards seeing what the running
processes represent. For further information about Process Explorer see
here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

I think the XP Firewall does not monitor outgoing calls? Are there any signs
of modem activity? Do the 2 minute interruptions occur when you are not
online?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

The interruptions occur all the time - on line or off. I've pulled the connection between my machine and the router. There are no indications of a virus and I've run repeated sweeps with Ad Aware.

A couple of the running processes are "lanman" "lanmanserver". These appear ro be legitimate Windows processes although I can't find any clear cut information about these whilst searching online. I'm clueless what to try next. Thanks for the help. If you think of something, let me know.

Are there any error reports or information reports in Event Viewer at two
minute interval? The thought occurs that something is timing out and trying
again. If you find a report post a copy.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling
two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure
this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. I think the problem is MSN bloody Messenger. I downloaded a process monitor and there it was turning red and green everytime the wait/hourglass came up. I had to go very deep to remove it. I actually found it in tools in the IE6 tool bar. I have never noticed it there before. I went to the registry and removed it from Local Machine and from User. I think that has worked. I'm hopeful.

It was incidious like a virus. I can't imagine MSN wanting to create something like this. I never actuated it or tried it. It was just checking for messages or . . .? Pretty scary if you ask me. I'll let you know if I have solved it. Thanks again.

Hi Gerry,

Think I might have solved the problem. MSNMessenger! I tried the download you recommended and there it was active each time the hourglass came up. I deleted the activity but it kept coming back - like ALien - and finally went in to the registry and forcibly removed it. I would surely love to complain to MSN. I've never experienced this kind of behavior before - never will again! I'm going to contact the folks at sysinternals and tell them of the failure of their program to remove it. Maybe this will help them to correct the glitch. My system has been stable so far. No wait/hourglass. Hopefully it won't find me again! Thanks for your help.
