Hourglass appears every two minutes - why?

Does anyone have any idea why the hourglass has recently begun to
appear beside my mouse pointer for about half a second every two
minutes?

Thanks in advance for your helpful replies.

Could be disk activity. Your system may have indexing enabled, and this will
do that. For the most part, you may have never noticed it until now. It
should go away in a while, but will always be active as you use your PC. If
it is something (you are sure) that isn't normal, then open the Task
manager, and under the processes tab, see if there is something that doesn't
seem like it should be.

Hi,

What is running in the background?

1. Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util

2. Run the Task Manager, go to View/Select Columns, and turn on the
following columns: "I/O Read Bytes" and "I/O Write Bytes." This will give
you details as to which process is accessing the disk.

3. Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.
