W98SE lost network but not Internet.

The user of a W98SE machine claims that one night they turned off a
working machine and the next morning they turned it on and could not
access any other PC/Server on the network.

However, the Internet, via a shared network router still works.

In Explorer, the Network shows only the user's own PC and a network
print server (TCP/LPR). A search for any other machine by name returns
nothing.

All machines are on the same workgroup.

Anyone have an idea what is going on here? How can the machine see some
of the devices (not PCs) on the network and not others?

The other PCs on the network are W2K Pro and W2K Server

Thanks

When you do ipconfig /all does it have a valid IP address? Does
anything odd show?

You may try uninstalling the network card and reinstalling. Also look
in TCPIP properties. The user may have inadvertently changed something.
Like Client for Microsoft Networks.

I think I have tried that, but I will try again when I get my hands on
the machine - but there must be a valid IP as otherwise how can see
parts of the network, primarily the Internet router.

It is an old machine (P3 450 or 750?) and not worth the effort to try
major surgery - who knows where the driver disks are ...

I was hoping that someone here might recognise the symptom of seeing a
small part of the network (router and print server) but not the real
PCs.
