I have W7 Ultimate on all my comps now including work laptop, with work laptop I use XP mode as some of the programs for my work only run in XP. Question is when I use XP mde do I have to install and AV or does it use the hosts AV ??

Short answer, yes.

XP mode is just like a virtual PC. The virtual PC has it's own environment and operates as if the host machine does not exist, even though it is using the host hardware.

think of it as dual-booting, although seamless ... each OS will/should have it's own AV :)
