W32time Internet Synch

G

Guest

My Internet Time Synchronization seems to have stopped working

If I try to Update manually using the Update Button then I am told that
"Windows has never attempted to synchronize with time.windows.com"

That is odd because it was working ok until a couple of weeks ago ?

If I try with the alternative then "An error occurred while Windows was
synchronizing with time.nist.gov"

I have tried Unregistering and ReRegistering but that doesn't seem to work
either - it won't Unregister, just informs me that it is Registered

The Windows Time Service is Running ok

I know there are other Internet Clocks I could synch with but I would like
to get this put right

Any solution other than tinkering in the Registry please?

I have had exactly the same problem which started after some recent Windows
updates and Norton Internet Security updates about 4/1/07. I am running
Windows Media Center 2005 with Office 2003 Standard.

I also performed the same steps as you described to fix the problem and have
had no success. I was just thinking about trying to reload MS Rollup 2 for
Media Center, but since you have the same problem I will hold off. Must be
one of the updates from either Norton or MS.

If you find a fix, please let me know. I just reloaded my system at end of
March and I don't want to screw anything up by trying to fix something that
only MS or Norton can fix.

Lesley,
Lots of people are having the same problem. I don't know why, and nobody
seems to have an explanation. But I added "time.xmission.com" to the list,
and it works for me. At least, it works for manually updating. I don't know
if it will work automatically though.

Double click the time on your task bar. Select "Internet Time". Left
click once in a clear area of the "Server:" window. Type in
"time.xmission.com" (no quotes) and click apply. (You won't loose the
addresses already there, the new one will be added to the list.) Click
"Update Now".

Hope this helps,
Milt

If I left Click in a blank area all I get is the cursor next to
time.windows.com

Anyway - I would prefer to get the Default working properly

Is there any way of resetting bak to it's Default working

I've tried w32 /resync and it says no time data available

Thanks anyway

Lesley,

When I click in the blank area, it hilghts the existing text. Then I enter
time.xmission.com click Apply and proceed to maniually update. If clicking
doesn't work, try dragging your cursor over the existing text to hilight it.
I'd preffer the existing address to work too, but I have no control over it.
And, as I said, what I described does work for me.

Try this, you have to issue the w32tm /unregister twice, as below:

net stop w32time
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /register
net start w32time

If you read other posts to these groups you will see that for many the
Windows Time service has been nothing short of an absolute mess since
the DST changes earlier this year. The present advice to many seems to
be to try different time servers until you get one that works.

I see the 392 says English Systems but - what does it actually do?

My Windows Clock did change properly for DST in March - it's just the
Internet time synch which has gone wrong

There are no Errors in Event Viewer

Hi Lesley

I agree with what others have said: the XP default time servers have not
worked properly for many people for a long time. In any case, if you're
in the UK, you're really better off using a time server nearer home :)

I use one from my ISP:
ntp0.zen.co.uk
but for several years used the University of Manchester's service at:
ntp2a.mcc.ac.uk
Another couple of good ones: Demon's at: ntp.demon.co.uk
University of Strathclyde: ntp.cis.strath.ac.uk

In Control Panel | Date and Time | Internet Time just click on the
Server: box to highlight the entry and type or paste in the new one. I'd
really recommend you try another server even though you seem reluctant
to do so -- at least then you will know if there is a problem with your
Windows setup or not.

Hope this helps :)

I suspect that NIST has changed the information output from its NTP time
servers recently increasing the indicated accuracy of the service. The
windows time server (w32time/w32tm) does not understand this and rejectes the
NTP response as having "bad precision".

See this W32time log file extract. Using time.nist.gov as the NTP server, the

error "Rejecting packet w/ bad precision" appears.

Is NIST too accurate for Microsoft?
