W2K Workstation as File Server - Login/Access Problems

We have a Windows 2000 workstation in a small user group acting as a file
server. The machine died and was replaced, W2K Pro was reinstalled, and to
the best of our abilities the installation was duplicated. All workstations
are running W2K Pro.

However, we are experiencing difficulties.

(( It is very important for us to tell you right now NONE of these problems
were occurring with the old W2K file server. Both of these machines had all
updates installed including SP4. ))

When individual users attempt to access read only files set to (No full
control, deny change, allow read) the workstations report. “Cannot copy
‘file-name’ the source file may be in use.†These users have had their
individual login names entered in the host computer (new pc). Sometimes
access will be allowed sometimes not. These login problems will occur if the
hosting machine and clients are freshly booted.

I suggested logging the machines in with the same user name (Administrator)
and seeing if login restrictions still occurred. This method allowed the
workstations access to the hosting computer without difficulty, the user then
promptly switched to his individual logins and access was again restricted.
(Again this was not necessary on the previous file server, and it is major
pain to switch up all the users profiles.)

PLEASE HELP! What is going on, what needs to happen to open up file access
again?

Are the workstations maintaining some ‘affection’ for their old file server?
Does the server need to be tweaked to allow access again?

PLEASE HELP!

You may have to reset the NTFS folder permissions on your pseudo
server.
