new workstations denied access

Win2K Server, 16 WinXP Pro workstations, simple workgroup environment with
shared drive on server, minimal security in trusting office. When we set up
the network, permissions and sharing were such that every workstation could
immediately join the workgroup and browse to the shared drives and pinters;
the login was saved and the connections were restored on every startup. We
are beginning the replacement of all workstations. Now when we swap out
machines, we must go to great lengths to get the computers on the network. We
cannot simply browse, but must access the server using "//server/drive", then
must change the user's password in order to gain access to the share. We must
go through this procedure again should the workstation be restarted. We
cannot display computers in the workgroup, but get the error that the network
is unavailable, we cannot browse for shared resource whether drives or
printers. The new machines do have new and different network cards, hence MAC
addresses. But we have added workstations in months previous without having
these difficulties. Thank you.

If you don't care the security and want easy sharing, you can enable guest account. However, it si not recommended. What you do is create the sameusers on the remote computer. this case study may help, quoted from http://howtonetworking.com.

Can't access remote computer after disabling Guest account
Situation: A small company has a peer to peer networking to share files and printers. One of technician worked on their site and suggested them to disable the Guest account for the security reason and they did. Next day, they found that they could not share each other any more. The logon screen kept pop up to ask for enter a password. They never used a password to logon and didn't know which password they should enter.

Cause: They shared each other by enabling Guest account. Since the Guest account was disabled, they could not share.

Resolution: To share two computers, they should create a same username and password on both computers.
