w2k to w2k networking

I have two w2k pc's sharing a home network via a hub.
Everything worked fine until I had to re-install w2k on
one of the machines. The IP addresses are set up correctly
and are on the same workgroup as before. I have no
firewall installed at the moment.

I can ping each computer but I now get the
message "network path not found" when the main pc tries to
access the other pc. What am I doing wrong? Is it
something to do with permissions? Help.

Furthermore I have ping the pc I re-built by IP address
but not by its name. Any help would be appreciated.

could it have something to do with the security level on the new
install of win2k. try enabling the guest account on the new install
(in users and passwords -> advanced, i think) and seeing whether that
works,

just to clarify can the main machine see the new machine in network
neighborhood, with the error occuring when you actually try to access
it?

Thanks for the response.

I can see the re-built pc on network neighborhood but when
I double click on it, it comes up with the
message "network path not found".

If I try & view the main pc from the re-built pc I can not
see it.

Thanks for you help I will try it out.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers. Got File- and printersharing loaded?

Thanks for your comments. I do have file & print sharing
installed. May be its because the drive on the re-built
client needs to be shared again. It comes up with C$. I
think I need to create a new share?

This strongly suggests that name resolution isn't working. Make sure
NetBT (NetBIOS over TCP/IP) is enabled on both machines.

To do this right click on Network places -> properties, select your
LAN connection -> properties -> TCP/IP -> Properties -> Advanced ->
WINS -> Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Try creating a share on the machine and accessing it from the other
via Network places - Entire network.

Also, if you were accessing a share on the other machine via a
shortcut to that share, check the properties of the shortcut to make
sure that the share it's pointing to still exists.

Hope this helps,

Bruce.

Just dealing with why you can't ping using NetBIOS name.

Two further possibilities:

Have you accidently enabled TCP/IP filtering? Look in TCP/IP
properties under advanced, options, properties.

Also, I assume there is no firewall?

Thanks,

Bruce.
