W2000 Pro networking problem

Hi,

I have a small home network of 3 PC's, 2 are W98SE and one W2000. I can ping
from W2K the other two, have already added their shared drives (i.e.
\\pc2\c) that works. Each PC is assigned with an IP in the same lot and
subnet mask. The 2 W98SE's do see eachother but W2K is not shown. Pinging
the name of W2K returns "Unknown host" and pinging the IP of it returns
"Request timed out".
On W2K under the workgroup (mygroup) there are no PC's not even the W2K
itself and trying to access the workgroup ends in:
"mygroup is not accessible.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"
error message.

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This type of problem is invariably caused by one of the following:
- IP addresses not being in the same subnet
- A firewall blocking your pings
- A network adapter set to 100 MBits/s with cabling or
with a hub that cannot cope with this speed.

Many virus scanners have embedded firewalls. They must be
turned off for the tests. Furthermore, the ZoneAlarm firewall
can be particularly difficult to turn off.

Until you resolve the ping problem there is no point in
trying to view workgroup machines.

Pegasus, thanks for your response.
The same subnet mask is used in all 3 (255.255.255.0)
I do use Norton IS 2004 (I have been, for several years without any problem)
I will check that again.
My NIC's and the switch I have been using for a few years and again without
any problems. All wired, no wireless network.

....and while writing this message I followed your advice on checking the
firewall, did a re-scan of home network and voila! all returned to normal.

Eventhough I geel a bit like an idiot (I should have dore the re-scan
beforehand) this is why I like the newsgroups with people like you out there
to help out others.

Thanks Pegasus for leading me to do the re-scan.

Have a great day,

Alp
