W2K SP4 DNS Servers stop resolving external domains

G

Guest

I have two servers running the following config.

W2K SP4
DC
GC
DHCP
DNS

As of three days ago, external DNS stopped resolving. Internal works great. I stop and start DNS and it works again for a random amount of time.

Forwarders are enabled with my ISPs dns listed.
"Do not use recursion" is unchecked.
"Secure Cache Against Pollution is checked.

The issue is not with my ISP. Both servers stop responding with in minutes of each other. These servers have been running with no configuration changes for more than 5 months. Last change was installation of SP4. I have tried the following with no luck:
Removing forwarders and re-adding them.
Reinstalled SP4.
Enabled Scavenging set to 14 days
Changed to completely different forwarding DNS servers

I have seen other posts with this problem, but no resolution. Please Help!!

Thanks

Have you checked the event logs to see if they shed some light into the
issue?

The only thing in the event log is the entry when I restart DNS and a few 5504 events, but that do not seem to match in any way. There is no warnings or signs that it will stop working. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

More information as I troubleshoot along.. My problem only occurs when there is no activity for a length of time (can not determine inactivity time). It stops working only at night. All during the day all is well.

Unfortunately, I'm stumped on this one. I have no idea why DNS would be
shutting down without some sort of event log entries.

I think the reason there are no event entries is because DNS itself is not going down. Internally it works. Just resolving outside domains..

Does ANY one have ANY ideas?

Thanks

Check to see if you any network devices going to sleep in the chain - external
adapter or maybe even the firewall/router [restart it next time it happens]. It seems
very odd that this would happen to two computers at the same time. I know some of the
consumer routers can go into a standby mode after a period of inactivity. Try to ping
the external dns servers by their IP address next time it happens. If that works,
then see if dns name resolution for the internet resumes. --- Steve
