unresponsive W2k, SP4 server

I have a W2k, SP4 server acting as domain controller, DHCP server, DNS
server, and departmental shared data server with Backup Exec 9 agent and
Symantec AV corporate 9 agent installed. Occasionally, users who are
working on files on the server will call that the server stopped responding.
It will respond to pings, but the advanced services will stop responding
(DHCP & DNS) and I cannot connect to any of the shares on the server.

I have tried stopping / starting services to no avail. Only solution seems
to be a reboot. There are no events written in the event logs.

Any ideas of cause or next steps in troubleshooting?

How many nics in your server? What OS on the clients? Does the ipconfig/all
on the clients show that everything is pointing to your server-IP?

Hello,

I would look and see if your AV software has real-time monitoring running.
I have seen issues where the AV software will try to scan a file being
accessed and hang itself. After that because the AV is a filter that files
must run through, it causes a hang. You can disable the AV and see if it
changes the behavior. However, sometimes only uninstalling the AV software
relieves the issue. If disableing has a positive response, look to see if
there are any updates to the AV software that may releave this issue.
